In the last lesson, you learned how to add 4-digit numbers.
Now, let's add even bigger numbers. The steps are the same.
Let's solve an example together.
24,789 + 34,765 = ?
1️⃣ First, write the numbers in column form.
2️⃣ Next, add column by column, starting with the Ones digits.
9 + 5 = 14
14 is greater than 9.
This means we need to regroup.
To regroup means to turn 10 from a lower place into 1 in a higher place value.
So, we regroup 10 Ones into 1 Ten.
Tip: Regrouping is also called "carrying the 1 over".
Next, we add the Tens digits, including the 1 that we carried over.
1 + 8 + 6 = 15
We need to regroup 15 Tens into 1 Hundred and 5 Tens.
Next, we add the Hundreds digits.
Make sure to include the 1 that was regrouped from the Tens place.
1 + 7 + 7 = 15
We need to regroup, or carry the 1, again.
Next, we add the Thousands digits.
1 + 4 + 4 = 9
We don't need to regroup. So we just write 9.
Lastly, we add the Ten Thousands digits.
We've got our final answer!
The sum of 24,789 and 34,765 is 59,554. ✅
Great job. 👏
Adding six- and seven-digit numbers is exactly like adding five-digit numbers.
Add column by column, starting from the Ones. Regroup when the sum in one column is 10 or more.
It doesn't matter how many digits there are, just follow these steps.
