Let's say that you want to go camping with your friend!
What's an important thing to check? 🤔
The temperature!
Temperature is how hot or cold something is.
If you check the temperature outside, you'll know what to wear and whether it's safe to go camping!
You can tell the temperature by reading a thermometer.
The red liquid inside the thermometer tells you the temperature.
As the temperature gets hotter, the red liquid rises.👆
As the temperature gets colder, the red liquid drops.
What is the temperature?
To read the thermometer, read the top of the red liquid.
The red bar is at 50 °F or 10 °C.
It's quite cool, so you decide to pack a few warm clothes into your bag.
Note that the numbers on the left side of the thermometer are bigger than the numbers on the right.
Do you remember why? 🤔
It's because there are 2 ways of measuring temperature:
Degrees Fahrenheit (°F)
and
Degrees Celsius (°C)
Most people in the United States use Fahrenheit.
Most people in the UK and other parts of the world use Celsius.
After a few hours of packing, the sky gets darker. You check the thermometer again.
What is the temperature now?
The red bar is at 32 °F or 0 °C.
This tells us that it's freezing cold. You might want to stay inside.
Water freezes at 0 °C or 32 °F.
Water boils at 100 °C or 212 °F.
The average human body temperature is around 37 °C, or 98 °F.
Tip: you have to memorize those. 👆
How do you know what the temperature will be like tomorrow?
👉 You can check the weather forecast.
A weather forecast shows you what the temperature will be like in the next few days.
There are 2 temperatures for Saturday.
The first tells you the highest temperature of the day.
The second is the lowest temperature of the day.
Look at the lowest temperature for Saturday.
It's 59 °F!
That's actually quite warm.
Knowing the weather forecast helps you prepare better for your activities!
It's early in the morning. You check the thermometer.
What is the temperature?
The red bar on the thermometer is at 50 °F or 10 °C.
The temperature is quite cool at this time of the day, so you put on a sweater.
By noon, the sun is high up in the sky. You take out your thermometer and check it again.
What is the temperature?
The red bar on the thermometer has risen to 86 °F or 30 °C.
It's really hot, so you take off your sweater and put on a hat.

At the end of the day, you look at what you've recorded. 👇
Did you notice anything?
👉 The highest temperature is 30 °C or 86 °F.
