Temperature is how hot 🔥 or cold 🥶 something is.
A thermometer is a tool used to measure temperature.
We measure temperature in degrees.
Fahrenheit (°F) is a measure of temperature used in the United States.
In Fahrenheit degrees, 30° is very cold and 100° is very hot!
The left thermometer shows a very cold day.
The right thermometer shows a very hot day.
Do you know what's inside a thermometer?
It's called mercury.
The hotter it gets, the higher the mercury goes!
🚑 Tip: If you ever break a thermometer, be careful. Mercury is toxic. Don't touch it.
Try to read this thermometer.
Look at which mark the red mercury ends.
The red mercury rises to the 70 °F mark.
You got it! The temperature is 70 °F.
Celsius (°C) is another measure of temperature.
Celsius is used is most countries in the world - except the United States!
In Celsius, 0° is very cold! 40° is very hot!
Look at this thermometer showing both Fahrenheit and Celsius.
0 °C = 32 °F
Tip: You will need to learn both Celsius and Fahrenheit. You'll use them both over your whole life!
Here are two thermometers from Tuesday and Saturday. Which day was hotter?
It was 80 °F on Tuesday and 90 °F on Saturday.
That means it was hotter on Saturday.
Great job! You can now read a thermometer!
In the United States, people say:
Water freezes at 32 °F
In the United Kingdom, people say:
Water freezes at 0 °C
Both of them are saying the same thing!
32 °F = 0 °C ⛄ Freezing
In the United States, people say:
Water boils at 212 °F
In the United Kingdom, people say:
Water boils at 100 °C
Both of them are saying the same thing!
212°F = 100°C = Water boiling
Congratulations. 🎉 You learned to read a thermometer!
Now, start the practice to make sure you got it.
