Fractions shows parts of a whole.
Whole numbers don't have fractional parts, like 1, 2, and 10.
Let's say we have the fraction 3/5.
We want to multiply it with the whole number, 8.
How do we do that? 🤔
1️⃣ First, convert the whole number into a fraction.
Write the whole number 8 as 8/1.
Tip: We can add 1 as the denominator because dividing by 1 doesn't change a number's value. This is called the identity property of division.
2️⃣ Now, multiply the numerators.
3️⃣ Then, multiply the denominators.
Our product is an improper fraction. It has a numerator greater than its denominator.
Let's convert it into a mixed number.
We do this by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
The remainder of our division, 4, is the numerator of the fraction part of the mixed number.
Fantastic work. You just learned to multiply fractions with whole numbers.
