The range of a set is the difference between the smallest and largest values.
Animals living in a savanna can run at different speeds.
Note: "mph" means miles per hour. This is a unit of speed.
Based on our list, what's the fastest animal?
Look for the largest number in the table.
The cheetah is the fastest. It can run 74.5 mph.
What's the slowest animal?
Look for the smallest number at the table.
It's the elephant, at 24.8 mph.
So what's the range of this table?
Range =
Highest - Lowest =
74.5 - 24.8 =
49.7 ✅
Knowing the range tells us that the fastest animal is 49.7 mph faster than the slowest.
Let's review a few things:
A set is a group of values.
A value is what's inside a set. It can be a number, but it can also be a thing.
To find the range of a set, just find the difference between the highest and lowest values. This means you subtract.
Let's try to find the range of this set:
12, 17, 14, 11, 15, 19
First, sort the numbers from smallest to largest.
11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19
Then, find the lowest and highest numbers.
Just look at the first and last numbers.
11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19
Finally, find the difference between these two numbers:
19 - 11 = 8
The range of this set is 8.
Remember:
Range tells us the difference between the highest and lowest values in a set.
Great work. 👏
Now, try the practice. You'll remember for longer.
