Now let's learn a few division patterns too.
Place Values Review
Revisión de los valores del lugar
Place values tell you the value of each digit in a number.
Bigger digits go left (👈) of smaller digits.
Now, let's look at some patterns that have to do with division and place values.
Division Patterns
Patrones de división
This is an example of a division pattern.
If you look at the first equation, the digits are 4 and 2.
Their values are:
Sus valores son:
4 Ones ÷ 2 = 2 Ones
4 Unos dividido por 2 = 2 Unos
The second equation shows the same digits, 4 and 2.
But this time, one zero is added to 4, and one zero is also added to the 2 in the quotient.
The digits are the same, but the place value of the dividend and quotient went up.
4 Tens ÷ 2 = 2 Tens
4 decenas dividido por 2 = 2 decenas
The place values of the dividend and quotient also increase in the third equation.
4 Hundreds ÷ 2 = 2 Hundreds
4 Centenas dividido por 2 = 2 Centenas
Now, if we multiply the left side by 10 again, we also multiply the right side by 10 to keep it balanced.
This makes the fourth equation:
Esto hace que la cuarta ecuación:
4 Thousands ÷ 2 = 2 Thousands
4 Miles dividido por 2 = 2 Miles
Do you see the pattern?
¿Ves el patrón?
Every time you multiply the dividend by 10, you also multiply the quotient by 10.
Another Example
Otro ejemplo
What pattern can we create out of this division equation?
15 ÷ 3 = 5
15 dividido por 3 = 5
We can multiply both the dividend (big number) and quotient (answer) by 10.
150 ÷ 3 = 50
150 dividido por 3 = 50
We can extend this pattern just by adding more zeros.
1,500 ÷ 3 = 500
1.500 dividido por 3 = 500
15,000 ÷ 3 = 5,000
15.000 dividido por 3 = 5.000
150,000 ÷ 3 = 50,000
150.000 dividido por 3 = 50.000
1,500,000 ÷ 3 = 500,000
1.500.000 dividido por 3 = 500.000
Can you figure out the answer to this?
¿Puedes averiguar la respuesta?
15,000,000 ÷ 3 = ?
15.000.000 dividido por 3 = ?
Fantastic! The answer is 5,000,000.
¡Fantástico! La respuesta es 5.000.000.
How did you get it so quickly?
¿Cómo lo conseguiste tan rápido?
Correct. You just extended the pattern.
Correcto. Acabas de extender el patrón.
Dividing Numbers Ending in Zeros
Dividir números acabados en ceros
There's another shortcut to getting the answer above.
Divide any non-zero digits in the dividend first, then add back the zeros.
Let's try it with a little harder example:
20,000 ÷ 4 = ?
20.000 dividido por 4 = ?
The only non-zero digit in the dividend is 2.
The divisor is 4.
El divisor es 4.
We cannot divide 2 by 4 because 2 is smaller than 4.
So we instead divide the first 2 digits of the dividend, and set aside the three other zeros for now.
20 ÷ 4 = 5
20 dividido por 4 = 5
We get 5 as the quotient.
Obtenemos 5 como cociente.
Next, we add three zeros back to get the final answer. 👇
20,000 ÷ 4 = 5,000
20.000 dividido por 4 = 5.000
Let's Review
Repasemos
When dividing numbers that end in zeros, ignore the zeros and divide the non-zero digits first. Then add the zeros back to get the final answer.
